FAQ

Razor clam questions, answered

When is the next razor clam dig in Washington?

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) publishes tentative dig dates for the season, then approves each tide series only after marine toxin tests pass, usually a few days ahead. DigTide lists every announced date with its low tide and digging window, and its live schedule page shows the next approved dig for Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks and Kalaloch.

What is the best tide for razor clam digging?

The best digging is in the one to two hours before low tide, and minus tides (below 0.0 feet) are best of all because more of the beach is exposed. DigTide charts every NOAA low tide, flags minus tides up to three months ahead and computes the digging window for each approved date.

What time should I get to the beach for a razor clam dig?

Plan to be on the sand about two hours before low tide and dig as the water goes out. For a 6:23 PM low tide, that means arriving around 4:20 PM. DigTide shows the exact window for every dig so you do not have to do the math in the parking lot.

How many razor clams can I keep in Washington?

The Washington daily limit is the first 15 razor clams you dig, regardless of size or condition. You may not put any back. Each digger must keep their clams in their own container. DigTide includes a tap-to-count limit counter and a rules cheat-sheet.

Do I need a license to dig razor clams in Washington?

Yes. Everyone aged 15 or older needs a valid Washington license that covers razor clams, such as a razor clam, shellfish or combination license, and must carry it while digging. Licenses are sold by WDFW online and at licensed dealers. DigTide links straight to the official license page.

Why are razor clam beaches sometimes closed?

Beaches close when marine toxins such as domoic acid exceed the safe level set by the Washington Department of Health, and they are closed outside WDFW-approved dig dates. DigTide shows live open, pending or closed status for each beach and sends emergency closure alerts free to everyone.

Which beaches does DigTide cover?

DigTide covers all five Washington razor clam management beaches: Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks and Kalaloch. It also provides tide predictions for any coastal spot or harbor worldwide.

How fast are DigTide dig-approval alerts?

DigTide checks WDFW announcements every ten minutes during the afternoon hours when approvals are usually posted, and every hour the rest of the day. When a dig is approved for a beach you watch, a push notification goes out right away with the first date and its low tide.

Does DigTide work offline on the beach?

Yes. Cell coverage on the coast is poor, so DigTide Pro includes an Offline Pack that saves two weeks of tide charts, dig windows and forecasts for your beaches. Everything keeps working with no signal.

How much does DigTide cost?

DigTide is free to download, and emergency closure alerts are free for everyone. DigTide Pro costs 1.99 US dollars a month, 9.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, or 24.99 once for lifetime access. Pro adds instant dig-approval alerts, a three-month minus-tide planner, the Offline Pack, a bite forecast and a home-screen widget.

Is DigTide affiliated with WDFW?

No. DigTide is an independent app. It reads public announcements from WDFW and the Washington Department of Health and tide predictions from NOAA. Always confirm current regulations, openings and closures with WDFW before harvesting.
